RevieWednesday: The Movies

The Movies is a tycoon/simulation game of running a movie studio, starting from the 1920's onward. Researching tech, shooting movies, hiring staff (janitors, builders, film crew, scientists, etc.) and stars (actors, directors, and extras), constructing buildings, and earning rewards. I remember playing the game when I was really young, playing the demo nonstop. I still even have the box with the discs.

POSITIVES
The game plays great and reflects greatly upon the history of movie making. For the time, the graphics look nice. The game has a great and varied soundtrack. There are thousands of people to hire, plus an actor/actress/director creation tool to boot. Complete with various newscasters for the various periods of American history during the 20th/21st centuries.

NEGATIVES
The actors/directors were made to be sims, requiring your attention and care. That is fine, except that you have the responsibility of the economic upkeep of a movie studio. So its either focus on the actors or focus on the studio, it sucks. Plus the studio lot size becomes problematic later in the game, because sets and buildings require space, by the 1970's, your lot is at capacity. Luckily there's a mod that can fix that, somewhat.

VERDICT: 3.9 out of 5 Stars
"The game is pretty good, didn't age too awesome and is attention heavy. This needs a sequel, badly."
