RevieWednesday: West Side Story (1961 Movie)

Side West Story is a musical about two street gangs warring over territory, but one member of Jets falls in love with the sister of the leader of the Sharks, singing ensues and Tony and Maria (the people I just mentioned) try to stop the fight to no avail. Their love affair was sooned stopped by Tino, her arranged husband, who goes out to kill Tony. After the Jets hassle Maria's mother, she tell them that she's dead. Tony hears the news and yells for Tino to find him. Maria finds Tony, only for Tony to die and Maria guilts both sides, the movie ends with the two gangs carrying Tony's dead body.

POSITIVES
This movie has great choreography, memorable songs, and classical plot. By classic plot I mean the story is based of Romeo and Juliet, so this movie is a modernization of a previous work...unlike the other times Hollywood modernized a movie and it didn't work, but West Side Story is a rare example of how you should modernize a previous work. Its also a really good example of how a movie adaption should work, since its a adaption of a musical play written in the late 50's. So this movies does right what the Dr. Seuss movies do wrong.

NEGATIVES
You can hate for me for this but, I don't like "I Feel Pretty", I'm just not a fan of it. The movie can be slightly predictable if you know about Romeo and Juliet, luckily the movie's different enough to have an identity of its own, so don't bank on "Same shit, different X" entirely. Despite the movie being a good example for modernization, its only modern to the 1950's. Good thing the movie's timeless enough to not get bogged down

VERDICT: 4.8 out of 5 stars
"This is one of the best musical movies to ever exist, only rivaled by Grease and Hairspray."
