Annie, or the new one anyway, is about a 10 year old foster girl who is being bossed around by this drunk former shadow of a woman, is also conveniently the person in charge of her and some other girls that only serve as foil to the plot. Then there is this mobile phone mogul, Mr. Stacks gets the idea to become mayor of New York, he later saves our Annie and temporarily adopts her for campaign advancement, there's some pop culture references followed by remixes of the older songs and then Mr. Stacks begins to like Annie instead of just a poll vote magnet. Then the campaign manager makes a deal with the drunk woman to fake he reappearance of Annie's parents (by the way, they left Annie at an Italian restaurant with the promise of reuniting with her and she having half a locket). The fake parents steal Annie unbeknownst to Mr. Stacks and an out of place action chase scene happens and the movie ends by barely tying the loose ends of the movie. Yeah, this movie is weird.
POSITIVES
I felt this movie really had an interesting plot with questionable execution (we'll get into that later). The Annie character is likable, and the other characters weren't grating either. The music is decent, but just decent, nothing else.
NEGATIVES
The execution of the plot is a little shaky. The whole thing with Annie having half a locket and her other parents felt like it was not really come full circle was just used for progressing the story because the writers got stuck somewhere. The music fells too modernized and sounds like it was mass produced by a chinese sweatshop like the other pop tunes of today. Also, there is a massive reliance on pre-determined character types. For instance, you've got the moody teenager, the really rich guy with a phobia of X, and the former shadow of one's self.
VERDICT: 3.5 out of 5 Stars
"The movie just tried to hard to become a remake of a classic movie, and that's coming from someone who didn't watch the original Annie."
